You’re Not Special, No One Owes You Anything – And That’s Your Superpower

I know, the title is blunt, but stay with me. I’ve learned through some of the toughest experiences—surviving cancer, grieving my dad’s death and speaking openly about my infertility—that no one owes us anything in life and no one is coming to save us. Accepting that truth has been one of life’s most empowering lessons for me that I take great comfort in.

Sometimes, we expect life to be fair, that we’re due some good luck after facing hardships and struggles, but life doesn’t work that way. The truth is the world is so big and we are not as relevant as we may think we are.

Take J.K. Rowling—she was rejected by 12 publishers before anyone saw her potential. No one owed her a bestseller, but she kept pushing, creating her own path to success. We can’t wait for things to fall into place; we have to build resilience by taking ownership of our challenges and making things happen.

When I faced cancer, I quickly realised that I wasn’t entitled to recovery or an easy journey from the remission phase. I had to fight for my health, mentally and physically. The same went for grief after losing my dad—no one could carry that pain for me and why should they? Embracing my grief and taking daily positive actions, instead of expecting the world to make things easier, is what helped me move forward.

Even with infertility, when things didn’t go the way I expected and the ‘fairytale’ simplicity of starting a family was out of my reach, I had to own that part of my story. Speaking openly about it wasn’t easy, but waiting for validation or understanding wasn’t an option either. I had to push through, knowing that resilience is built by facing the tough stuff head-on to live a better life in the future not just for yourself but for the people who love you.

My Challenge to You

The next time life feels unfair, remind yourself: No one owes you an easy road, but you owe it to yourself to keep going. Real strength comes from owning your struggles and pushing forward, no matter what.

Stay resilient,

Ro
